Northern Lights

Admittedly I got a late start to capturing the Northern Lights. I wasn’t initially planning on going as I wasn’t feeling very well, but I got more than a few texts from friends asking if I was going out or sending me links to news articles about it. So I headed out at midnight on Friday night and followed this up with a repeat attempt on Saturday. I struggled both nights with getting the right focus and I didn’t see any color on Saturday night at all. The following photos are the best I could do on Friday. One photo is taken from a pull out on the upper part of Hwy 88 with Four Peaks on the right side. The other is shot from Canyon Lake with Four Peaks in the middle.

South Mountain Trailhead

With more than 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, South Mountain has numerous trailheads. This one is located on the Ahwatukee side just off 19th Ave. There used to be two Cactus’ that stood on each side of the entrance to the park, but the other one collapsed leaving this one as the sole guardian of the trail.

I remember watching the Space Shuttle launches with great excitement as a child but I had never seen a live launch until this past week when I saw a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket take off from Vandenberg Space Center in California. Shortly after lift off the rocket broke through the twilight clouds and raced across the skyline above Papago Park.

Dry

As we enter March, as those in colder climates are looking forward to warmer temperatures and less snow, we here in the valley know that the hot summer temps will be upon us sooner than later. The recent record highs of the past couple of years have been hard on all residents of Arizona, including those we consider well-suited for our dry heat here. The extended dry spells we have had in the valley take a toll on our Saguaros’ as they rely on water not only for hydration, but to support their massive frames. The water pulled into the cactus helps to provide strength to their structure and without enough water they just can’t hold themselves up. Dry skin like this one can be a sign of trouble. I’m hopeful our rains and winter storms this year will help the valley’s most majestic plants replenish and revive ahead of the coming heat.

Canyon Snow

Over the past few days, the weather in Phoenix has gotten quite a bit cooler than it had been in the days past. We’ve also had a few rain showers come through which meant wet and cool weather here, but can mean snow in the higher elevations. I woke up about 3 am Saturday thinking about the snow that might be seen at those higher elevations and by 530 was packed up in the car and on my way to Sedona. I ran around the city for a while and got some shots of snow covering the surrounding mountains even though there wasn’t much on the ground at Sedona’s elevation. Then I wandered up to Oak Creek and while the trailhead is only 10 miles outside of Sedona the change in snow cover was pleasantly dramatic.

Canyon Lake Sunset

I’ve made a few trips down to Canyon Lake in the past week or so with a few different ideas of what I was looking for in my head. Sometimes on these trips I get what I was looking for and sometimes, like on this trip, a scene that seems pretty dull just opens up for me. I had parked at this wayside and at the time the sky was pretty dull and the peaks were dark. Then for a span of about 5 minutes the last sunlight hit the ridges of Four Peaks and added a little color to the nearby clouds. I did capture some frames with a much brighter sunlight on the peaks but it was almost too much so I settled for this more muted image.

Wolves

Found at the Phoenix Zoo, these are two Mexican Wolves. These wolves are considered to be the most distinct genetically of all the wolf species as well as the smallest. Nearly eliminated from the wild due to over hunting the Mexican Wolf was placed on the endangered species list in 1976 and has been making a comeback thanks to breeding and reintroduction programs.

An idea for a photography project with a friend of mine at the hospital prompted me to hit the streets last night as the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a high-rise fire not far from my apartment complex. While standing at the scene I noticed that PFD had 2 apparatus parked on each side of the tracks for the local light rail. This photo is a long exposure shot of Ladder 1, the closer truck, as the train passed through the scene.
