Day 4B: Banff Gondola and Lake Minnewanka

I said we made the most of our last day and I meant it. After hiking to the Ink Pots we drove back into Banff and had a fantastic dinner at The Grizzly House. The Grizzly House isn’t entirely different than The Melting Pot, although they bring you a stone heated to 600-700 degrees and you cook your meat on it as opposed to in a pot of oil..although you can choose to do that instead if you wish.

Once we had stuffed our faces we drove over to the Banff Gondola for our scheduled ride to the top. The Banff Gondola was opened in July 1959 and renovated in 2015. In eight minutes the Gondola whisks you 2200 feet to the upper terminal. At the top, there are shops, a restaurant, and 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. Once on top of the mountain, you can follow a boardwalk to Sanson Peak. The area is named after a park meteorologist, Norman Sanson, who would hike on foot to the top of the mountain to record weather observations for the town of Banff. In 1903 a stone observatory was built which is still there today and is featured in these photos. The Gondola Tickets were about $60 and were worth every penny. We allocated 2hrs to run around on top of the mountain and as our time came to an end we both agreed we could have spent 5 hours up there and been perfectly happy. On our way back to the Gondola we came across 3 mountain goats grazing on some foliage and food dropped from the observation deck of the Gondola Station.

After spending time on the mountain we decided to make one last sightseeing run out to Lake MInnewanka to watch the last light of the day. Lake Minnewanka is the 2nd longest lake in the mountain parks of the Canadian Rockies. Like the other lakes, it takes on a rich blue-green color from minerals suspended in the water and is the color seen in the attached photo.
