Feeling a need to get out of my apartment and the city I drove down to Picacho Peak State Park as I had seen it in passing a few times but had never stopped to check it out. In fact on a clear day from the top of South Mountain you can actually just make out the jagged edge of Picacho Peak some 70 miles to the south. I got a late start and wasn’t able to hike to the top so I wandered around on some of the lower trails taking in the views. Picacho Peak State Park is relatively small, but offers hiking trails, scenic, views and plenty of wildflowers during the spring. The park is also of historic significance as the Battle of Picacho Pass (the western most battle of the Civil War to involve fatalities) was fought there.
