Sitting on the isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, the capitol building in Madison is a prominent figure on the Madison skyline and sits surrounded by local businesses and UW campus buildings alike. Standing 284 feet tall the capitol is the tallest building in Madison, a status protected by legislation that prohibits other buildings from being built taller than the columns surrounding the capitol dome. This building, completed in 1917, is the fifth iteration of a capitol building in Madison. The prominent dome seen in this photo is made out of Bethel White Granite from Vermont.
The photo was taken from the top of Observatory Drive before it winds its way down toward the Memorial Union. The road hosts the UW Madison Washburn Observatory a historic building built in 1878, almost 40 years before the current capitol was completed.
