At first, he was just a giant shape. I could see the ridge of his head over our countertop and had just enough time to think of how big he must be before he cleared the kitchen island and set his eyes on me. He was older and underfed but it was obvious that with some food and time, he was going to be a big dog. I called his name and he padded over to me until we were nose to nose. His eyes were a beautiful brown and I saw nothing but a gentle kindness in them.
The years rolled on. I headed out on my own but would go back often to visit him, his brother and his owners. He was always happy to see me and would follow me until I came to a stop and then push his big head into my hand for pets or lean on me.
Time does not come with a pause button and the years added up for our gentle giant. His hips seemed to bother him, his legs became weak. He started having trouble eating and drinking and incontinence was a real issue. A few days before Thanksgiving I got the text I had been dreading, asking if I wanted to be there when he was put to sleep. Of course I said yes and on Friday I held my big buddy’s head in my hands one last time and told him I loved him. He left us surrounded by the things he loved; Johnny, Chelsea, me, his bed, sunlight……and peanut butter.
