The Westward Ho

The past few days we’ve had some clouds and light rain roll through the valley which, if it doesn’t completely blanket the city, can provide some truly spectacular sunsets. This has been the case the past few days so I ventured out into my neighborhood to see what the weather might provide.

This is The Westward Ho. It was built as a hotel in 1928 and was the tallest building in Arizona for 30 years. The hotel served as the site for numerous large scale events and weddings. The hotel can also be seen in movies such as the 1998 remake of Psycho, the 1972 movie Pocket Money with Paul Newman and the 1965 movie Bus Stop starring Marilyn Monroe. The antenna on top of the building was used to broadcast the first television station in Phoenix and is now used as a cell tower.

Phoenix Balloon Festival

A couple weeks ago I decided to take my camera to the Halloween Spooktacular Hot Air Balloon Festival. I’ve never been to a hot air balloon festival but enjoyed my time. I got there early enough to see several balloons being put together and inflated….a process that took far less time then I would have thought. All in all it was a fun evening.
