When I first moved to AZ in 2012, I spent a week living in Gilbert Arizona with the gracious parents of my friend and soon-to-be roommate/study buddy/RN school classmate Nate. At the time the downtown area had some nice places to eat and a few shops to meander through. Since then the area has blossomed and now sports a wide variety of eating establishments and entertainment venues.
The centerpiece of this area is Water Tower Plaza. The water tower was erected in 1927 and was initially used to store water for firefighting and then transitioned to hold drinking water until 1985. A nearby pump house provided the pressure needed to push water to the tower’s height of over 230 feet. Gravity then provided the pressure needed to disperse the water to the town’s residents. While the water tower ceased operations after 1985 the decision was made in 2008 to renovate the water tower and build the plaza that it now sits on. The property now hosts numerous events throughout the year and the tower has been fitted with lighting that draws the eye after the sun goes down.
