Watson Sunrise

Being a mid-shift or night-shift nurse leads to some weird habits. I eat at odd hours, sleep at odd times during the day, and often stay up all night so that I’m not flip-flopping my sleep schedule too much. As such some of those wee hours of the morning find me kind of bored and can lend themselves to last-minute photography trips for something to do. So it was two weeks ago that I decided at 3 am to make a drive up to Watson Lake in Prescott to capture some early morning photos. I was hoping with it being a weekday and quite early in the morning that I wouldn’t have to contend with too many other people and as it turns out I didn’t. My greatest challenge was racing the rising sun so I had enough light to highlight the dock, but not so much that I couldn’t use a long exposure to smooth the water into a glass-like surface. In the end, I used a 9-stop ND filter to manage the light and get the shot I wanted.

Phon D Rise

Spring Bloom

Feeling a need to get out of my apartment and the city I drove down to Picacho Peak State Park as I had seen it in passing a few times but had never stopped to check it out. In fact on a clear day from the top of South Mountain you can actually just make out the jagged edge of Picacho Peak some 70 miles to the south. I got a late start and wasn’t able to hike to the top so I wandered around on some of the lower trails taking in the views. Picacho Peak State Park is relatively small, but offers hiking trails, scenic, views and plenty of wildflowers during the spring. The park is also of historic significance as the Battle of Picacho Pass (the western most battle of the Civil War to involve fatalities) was fought there.

Deadfall

I had family and friends visiting over the past couple of weeks which allowed for numerous trips back up to Sedona to hike the trails and enjoy the views. It’s game day here in Phoenix and we are hosting one of the world’s premier sporting competitions in our fair city. The past week has seen multiple road closures around the city to allow for the setup of various entertainment venues and a steady influx of people. Despite what I was anticipating, it hasn’t been too overwhelming either around the city or at work so I ran out a few days ago to take pictures at Papago Park and found about the same number of people as I would on any given day.

After getting the shot of Courthouse Butte, I drove into Sedona to find some early morning hot chocolate and found an entire plate of breakfast food to go with it. I then ventured up highway 89A toward Flagstaff. I drove through Flagstaff until I was on the small winding road making its way up to Snowbowl.

Sedona Sunrise

For a while now I’ve been pondering the idea of heading out on a short trip that would involve an early morning sunrise and sleeping in my car. On Friday morning I left work a little after 3 am and drove directly to one of my favorite overlooks in Sedona after a short stop at home to get some supplies. Once parked I pulled out the down comforter I had taken from my bed, set the alarm for one hour, and got a short nap in. I woke up to temps in the low 30s and a sunrise that was starting to brighten the sky. There wasn’t as much snow as I would have liked but there is a clear dusting to be seen on the walls of Courthouse Butte.
