Watson Lake

Located 4 miles outside of Prescott, Arizona, Watson Lake is one of two reservoirs at the Granite Dells. The lake and surrounding park are open year-round and are a popular spot for hiking, canoeing, and boating. The reservoir has an average depth of 50 feet and was purchased, along with the surrounding land, by the City of Prescott in 1997 to be used as a recreational area.

Salt River Sunrise

With a few days off, I decided to stay up and head to one of my favorite spots at sunrise. I arrived in darkness and stayed until the sun was well above the horizon and the heat of the day was starting to settle in. The Salt River is the largest tributary of the Gila River and runs about 200 miles before ending at the southwest edge of Phoenix and gets its’ name from the large salt deposits it flows over near the starting point. This lower section of the Salt River where is photo was taken is widely used for fishing, tubing, and kayaking but is also home to numerous forms of wildlife including the wild horses seen in this photo.

Superstition Flowers

It’s been a rainy past couple days here in Phoenix so yesterday I headed back out to the Superstition mountains to see if I could find some flowers to shoot against the mountains. The last time I had been out this way the National Park Service had closed all the trails due to a looming wildfire so it was nice to get closer to the mountain this time.

The Trees

It’s not that we don’t have trees in Phoenix. We do….many different kinds in fact, but in general, they are used as decoration in outdoor malls or lining our streets. To go out and stand in a forest, however, you generally need to get out of Phoenix, which is what I did a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Prescott. While there I visited and hiked the Lynx Lake trail for the first time. The hike itself is a very easy 3.3 mile loop but provides complete immersion in the woods beside the lake and that is where the trees in this shot were found. The cooler temps that day mixed with the surrounding forest definitely reminded me of wooded areas back home in Wisconsin and the silence, aside from meeting the occasional fellow hiker, was a great reprieve from the noise of the city and the chaotic assault of sounds that come with working in the ER.

Background: While I was home this summer my buddy AJ was quite keen to check out my drone. After finding out that his house was within a restricted flight zone, and a failed attempt to fly at a local park due to an unexpected dog show we found a park out amongst the fields in Caledonia. While drone photo’s and video’s are becoming more and more common I still enjoy the unique perspective provided through such a medium.
