Latourell Falls

Latourell Falls is one of the few falls in the Colombia River Gorge where you could potentially walk right up to the water falling 249 feet from the top. Preferring to stay as dry and arm as the blustery day would allow, we climbed down to the water but stayed well back from the water’s impact point.

Aspen Grove

Growing up to 80 feet in height and living as long as 200 years, Aspen trees thrive best in locations with moist soil and plenty of sunshine, which makes Flagstaff a prime location.

Lockett Meadow

For the past couple week’s I have been itching to get out and see some fall colors. I debated on taking a trip to Washington or Colorado. In the end I decided to focus my attention on a part of Arizona that I’ve driven through a few times but have never stopped in, that being Flagstaff. In particular I was curious to check out Lockett Meadow which I’ve heard amazing things about. Last Monday I finally had the chance to go check it out and it certainly did not disappoint. Lockett Meadow is a mix of rustic camping sites and parking for day adventurers looking for a picnic or hike. The Inner Basin Trail head can be found here and, after gawking at the incredible views, is where I decided to spend my time. The trail provides a sometimes gradual, sometimes not so gradual uphill grade that evens out to switchbacks the latter part of the hike. Unbeknown to me at the time, what you are hiking up is actually the sides of an ancient volcano long since dormant which erupted and formed the San Francisco Peaks. While I I 100% recommend this area and this hike to anyone wanting to get out of Phoenix and out into nature, particularly this time of year when the colors are spectacular, there are a couple things to keep in mind. The last 3 miles of the drive are definitely off-road and while I saw very average passenger cars making the trip don’t expect to bring a trailer up with you…the road is too rough and in some sections barely wide enough to allow two cars to pass each other. Parking at the meadow is pretty good but I would definitely recommend car-pooling to limit the number of vehicles you would have to find spots for. Finally, make sure you bring enough water for your adventure as there are no drinkable water sources on them mountain.

Bush Fire Sunrise

Smoke from the Bush Fire drifts over the face of Four Peaks outside of Phoenix. The fire which at this time is 42% contained has burned over 184000 acres prompting numerous closures and evacuations throughout the area.

The Lower Salt River

I decided to get out of the house and fly the drone after most of the heat of the day had gone. I headed out to a favorite spot off of Bush Highway and along the lower end of the Salt River. While there I managed to get some shots in of another spectacular Arizona sunset.

Lynx Lake

Another photo from my trip to Lynx Lake in Prescott. The trail hugs the shoreline closely for 90 percent of the hike and brings you many of these small coves where reeds or fallen trees sit at the waterline.

Fall in Sedona

I took up a trip to Sedona to see some fall colors. I got a bit of a late start and thus found myself unable to get to all the trails and sites I had to hoped to but I still had a good time. It was nice to get out of the city and Sedona is always so beautiful.
