Into the Storm

While I generally tell people I just get lucky a lot or I “just push a button,” there is some technical and experiential knowledge behind most of my photographs. In this case, however, it honestly just came down to dumb luck. My original plan was to capture a still frame “plate” of either several lightning strikes and then use a layer mask to add the plane, or get a still frame of the plane and then attempt to add the lighting. In this case, I was shooting the still frame of the plane at 30 FPS when the lightning struck in the background and was naturally included with the aircraft.

Sunset Storm

We’ve been blessed with an abundance of evening storms over the past week or so. Days will start sunny and hot, but by mid-afternoon, high-level clouds will crowd the horizon, and by late afternoon storms begin rolling through the area. Standing on a rock outcropping gave me a decent vantage point of both the sunset to the north and the storm rolling in from the south.

I took a quick (read last minute) hike up to the Sanctuary on South Mountain to play around with true long-exposure photography. A lot of my light trail photos have been either single 30-second exposures or multiple 30-second exposures blended together. This is a single frame 5-minute exposure taken about 30 minutes after sunset.

Desert Fury

I made arrangements with a friend of mine to meet out in Gold Canyon to do some hiking and see if we could find a good composition of the rock walls. Driving out to the canyon I was a little concerned as I could see weather building up and, contrary to normal weather patterns, moving from the east. Sudden cloud bursts can lead to flooding in the desert and we didn’t want to get stranded anywhere we wouldn’t be able to get out of. As it turns out it was the wildlife that cut our hike short. About a mile in we came across a very angry Western Diamondback Rattlesnake that was nice enough to warn us he was wrapped around the base of a cactus. We considered ourselves lucky we were able to spend a very peaceful evening watching thunderstorms cross the southern desert from the safety of the trailhead, and not in the ER.

A friend and I decided to take a last-minute hike on South Mountain. The weather was looking somewhat threatening so I decided to take my camera equipment along in case a good photo opportunity presented itself. As we worked our way toward the top of the Mormon Trail it became apparent that a beautiful sunset was in the works. I pulled out my camera, setup my shot and that’s when I realized I had left both of my memory cards at home. Thankfully I still had my iPhone with me and managed to take this before the sun completely set.

Admittedly I got a late start to capturing the Northern Lights. I wasn’t initially planning on going as I wasn’t feeling very well, but I got more than a few texts from friends asking if I was going out or sending me links to news articles about it. So I headed out at midnight on Friday night and followed this up with a repeat attempt on Saturday. I struggled both nights with getting the right focus and I didn’t see any color on Saturday night at all. The following photos are the best I could do on Friday. One photo is taken from a pull out on the upper part of Hwy 88 with Four Peaks on the right side. The other is shot from Canyon Lake with Four Peaks in the middle.

South Mountain Trailhead

With more than 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, South Mountain has numerous trailheads. This one is located on the Ahwatukee side just off 19th Ave. There used to be two Cactus’ that stood on each side of the entrance to the park, but the other one collapsed leaving this one as the sole guardian of the trail.

I remember watching the Space Shuttle launches with great excitement as a child but I had never seen a live launch until this past week when I saw a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket take off from Vandenberg Space Center in California. Shortly after lift off the rocket broke through the twilight clouds and raced across the skyline above Papago Park.
