Saguaro

The Saguaro cactus is one of the most prominent plants in Arizona. They can tower above the desert with an imposing height over 30 feet tall and weight (when full with water) of up to 4800 pounds. For such a large plant the root structure is relatively shallow with most roots only 4-6 inches underground but spread out from the base as far as the cactus is tall. Provided the right conditions the saguaro cactus can live 150-200 years.

The Secret Slick Rock Trail in Sedona opens up onto a large Mesa with dips and curves etched into it through years of erosion. These troughs will collect and hold rainwater adding an unexpected element to what is essentially an enormous piece of rock.

This photo was taken on a mesa that is found at the end of the Secret Slick Rock trail. The trail is short, flat and opens up on the mesa which overlooks the Crescent Moon Picnic site with a spectacular view of Cathedral Rock in the background.

A Barrel Cactus sits in the deserts the sun sets over the nearby mountain peaks. Barrel Cactuses are capable of sprouting flowers from the top of their dome but the dry conditions have thus far prevented such growth on this one.

Phon D. Sutton Sunset

Phon D. Sutton recreation area is a popular spot for hikers, campers, and tubers that sits just outside of Phoenix in the Tonto National Forest. Normally accessible by car the recent COVID restrictions meant that the road was blocked at the far entrance leaving only a small wayside lot from which to view the desert scenery.

Alta Trail

On the far west side of South Mountain is the trailhead for the Alta Trail. The hike to the top is a moderate two-mile trek that provides a summit view of downtown Phoenix and the west valley. Depending on what time of year you venture up the mountain you may see wildflowers blooming amidst the rocks.
