Hole in the Rock

In Papago Park there is a natural geological feature called Hole in the Rock which is…..exactly what it sounds like…a large rock formation with a hole in the middle of it. Clearly, this is not the best vantage point from which to see the hole, but the formation standing above the waterline caught my eye and was well framed by the palm tree’s in the foreground.

Treasure Loop

Located on the far east edge of the metropolitan area of Phoenix and its’ surrounding communities, the Tonto National Forest covers an expanse of over 4000 square miles and includes almost 200 hiking trails. This is one of them…..or at least a trail marker for one of them. The Treasure Loop trail is described as a moderate 2.3 mile hike along the base of the Superstition Mountains.

Red Mountain

Mount McDowell, aka Red Mountain, towers above the lower end of the Salt River and the valley to the west with prominent peaks such as Camelback Mountain in the background.

Camelback View

Camelback mountain rises at the far end of a street street in Phoenix, Arizona. The mountain is the home to two major hiking trails and few upscale residences built into the mountainside.

Marcos De Niza Trail

A friend and I decided to find a less-traveled trail of the offerings on South Mountain. The Marcos De Niza Trail starts at the trailhead off of 48th street, climbs quickly and runs along the ridgeline on South Mountain until meeting up with the National Trail. This picture was taken at the terminal point of our hike but the trail continues on for another 1.5miles before meeting the National Trail at the Buena Vista overlook. The day also highlighted the challenge that is dressing for hikes in Arizona during the winter months. The temperature dropped from near 80 at the start to mid 50’s by the time we made it back to the car.

Desert Stream

Rivers and streams do cross through the desert here in Arizona. Sometimes big, sometimes small, sometimes dependent on the amount of rainfall we’ve had recently…..but always seeming to stand in stark contrast to the dry and cracked landscape they cross.
